Spain SailGP Team Leads Standings After Day 1 of Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix on the Hudson

JUNE 7, 2025, NEW YORK | SailGP, the most exciting racing on water, took to the Hudson on Saturday for Day 1 of the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix as 12 teams raced in the global championship, with the Spain SailGP Team taking the top spot on the leaderboard after the first three fleet races in rainy conditions.

The Spain SailGP Team picked up right where it left off after winning the Oracle San Francisco Sail Grand Prix in March by capturing 25 points on the day, followed by the France SailGP Team and the ROCKWOOL Denmark SailGP Team tied for second with 20 points apiece. Spain won the first fleet race, with Australia’s BONDS Flying Roos SailGP Team, recently acquired by new Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, winning the second fleet race. The New Zealand SailGP Team won the final fleet race of the day.

Spain SailGP Team driver Diego Botin said: “I don't know what we did so well today, to be honest, it was so hectic out there. Managing the priorities on the boat around in these kinds of conditions is a tough thing. But with these conditions, you cannot stop fighting until the end, and it paid off.”

The U.S. SailGP Team finished 11th on the day with six points total across the three fleet races.

The U.S. SailGP Team’s Anna Weis said: “It’s rain or shine, and it was really cool to see the fans come out and support us. It was a super, super tricky day. Sometimes you’re foiling and it's feeling really, really good and then other times you're off the foils and you're really fighting that current hard. It's just so challenging to get around the race course, but that being said, there was a lot of opportunity to make up for some lost ground.”

Prior to the racing beginning on Saturday, SailGP Chief Hype Officer, Grammy-Award winning music mogul DJ Khaled, hyped up fans in the grandstands, and Tony-Award winning artist Patina Miller sang the national anthem. National broadcast personalities Amy Robach and TJ Holmes, and influencer New York Nico were also in attendance.

Hosted by SailGP in front of the world’s most famous skyline, the event marks the sixth stop in the 2025 season for the Rolex SailGP Championship – an annual global championship in iconic cities around the world, with 12 national teams battling it out in identical 50-foot foiling catamarans, racing faster than wind speeds at over 60 miles per hour.

Racing will resume at 3:30 p.m. Sunday with additional fleet races in sunnier conditions, concluding with a winner-takes-all final. Tickets for tomorrow remain available at SailGP.com/NY.
